Trump can't extend DACA past March 5: DHS

by Pete Kasperowicz | Jan 16, 2018, 1:00 PM

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said Tuesday that she doesn't believe President Trump will be able to extend the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program past March 5.

There were some indications last year that Trump would be willing to extend DACA if Congress were unable to agree on how to legislate the program that until now was a unilateral plan put in place by former President Barack Obama.

But in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing, Nielsen said she doesn't believe Trump has that option to help younger immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

DACA's illegal.   It can only be made legal by an act of Congress, signed by the President.

I think Trump's right - the Dems have no interest in codifying DACA,  and therefore no interest in helping these folks.   The Dems do much better politically by watching them suffer with their status undetermined and the threat of deportation hanging over their heads.   That's the status that brings in the contributions and allows the Dems to call everyone who insists on the rule of law to be a racist.

Does this mean that after March 5, daca is "dead"?

If so, let's hope that the deadlock continues!

As of March 6, it will be "game over, man!"

Nothing is ever "dead" in DC. Government programs are the undead.
