Bre Payton, 26 year old writer for the Federalist caught the flu, she died suddenly. I am not saying she died of the flu, that may be part of it..

Richard Overton had been the oldest living veteran of American wars. He died Thursday.
Darren Abate/AP

The United States has lost its oldest World War II veteran. Richard Overton, who fought overseas in a segregated unit, died Thursday at age 112.

He was hospitalized recently after a bout with pneumonia and took his last antibiotic on Dec. 21 — "a true soldier in fighting this infection battle with all that he has," his cousin, Volma Overton, said on

Richard Overton was born in 1906, near Austin, Texas. He enlisted in the Army in 1940, before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He joined the 1887th Aviation Engineer Battalion, a unit made up of black soldiers, and served in Pearl Harbor, Okinawa and Iwo Jima.

I remember only meeting Bre briefly at a press conference, but I admired her smart, thoughtful & bold pro-life reporting. From everything I know of her, she was a beautiful soul who will be sorely missed. Prayers for all her loved ones and family.

Then, links to the Federalist article: http://thefederalist.com/2018/12/28/bre-payton-beloved-staff-writer-passed-away/

Rest in peace, I'm unsure how someone like this, so young, could be questioned on the Neil Cavuto show on Fox Business but she was on there. I mean, it seems like they say she was writing for the Federalist while still in college. Perhaps a bit of freelancing, quite a few end up doing that.

It sounds like Bre was headed towards OANN, One American News Network.

I put two and two together this am. I get a daily newsletter from The Federalist. She wrote some dynamite stuff on TV, especially the Bachelor franchise. What a talent.  888cryingkitty

Yes, Dean had the first hit with it.

Bobby Rydell also had a hit with it twice: once in 1960, and again in the mid-1970s as a disco number.

Yes he did---but I think the Pussycat Dolls' version is the best one. (I first heard it near the end of the Richard Gere film Shall We Dance and loved it immediately.)

Another '50s star who had a hit with it was . . .

Xavier Cugat and His Orchestra, "Sway"

Sorry...

Here's the original version, by the performer for whom its original writer Luis Demetrio wrote it:

Pablo Beltran, "Sway"

That scene in "Shall We Dance" with Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez is just great (the one shown in the video).

My husband and I actually like that movie a lot and watch it now and again just for fun.

Yes, Dean Martin, born in Steubbenville and many other artists covered it.

A cover this time, though, seems okay I suppose. Myself, I don't really care, black, white, Italian and so on, I'd probably give reference to the singer who made it famous.

June Whitfield, ‘Absolutely Fabulous’ and ‘Terry and June’ Actress, Dies at 93

Sorry...

She is well known over in the United Kingdom, she may have some official title as well, the kind royalty give out to citizens of that great country, Dame? Or something, I'm not too familiar with that.

Oh, she was on Benny Hill too,  I guess, I saw her on there regularly, I just didn't know her name.

Soccer = Football:

Quote
One of the methods he used to save children was to take them to the Swiss border, then kick a football over the frontier and get them to chase it.

"I spotted a football pitch that was on the border. It was made up of fences two-and-a-half metres high. I saw that there was nobody," he said.

"I made the children play, I told some of them to lift up the fences and I passed the ball."

From:    Georges Loinger: French hero who saved Jews in WW2 dies

The article seems to say, he himself was born into a Jewish family, just saying, remarkable story.  When people play football, they kick it countless times over the net, sort of like hitting a foul ball in baseball.

Ray Sawyer, co-lead singer of Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show, dies at 81

Sawyer is at front of their titular "cover of the Rolling Stone"

As a struggling musician, Sawyer initially decided to seek a more practical career in the late 1960s, but lost an eye in a car accident while pursuing work as a logger. As he put it, he "went back to the beans and music" and, with his eyepatch making him resemble a pirate, came up with his new gimmick: the band would now be known as Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show (Hook after the Peter Pan pirate, the doctor/medicine schtick from the various drugs the band reputedly took). Although the band still struggled (albums like Bankrupt and Belly Up! were regular in the era), the band secured the services of famed songwriter Shel Silverstein, who gave the group several hits such as "The Cover of the Rolling Stone."

In the late 1970s, the band, increasingly under the influence of the other co-lead singer Dennis Locorriere, broke through to consistent fame by moving toward a disco-influenced soft rock styling. Sawyer eventually left the band around 1980. Although Locorriere still owns the rights to the Dr. Hook name, he allowed Sawyer a license to continue touring under the name.

He eventually stopped performing in 2015, in part because of illness and in part because Locorriere decided there should only be one group using the Dr. Hook name.

Dr. Hook is from Union City New Jersey, or do the locals say "Joizy" or something like that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Hook_%26_the_Medicine_Show

But as further reading shows of the above article, 3 of the members of the original band including Ray Sawyer who just passed, were from the South, Sawyer from Alabama per the article. Sawyer apparently was the leader and wore the eye patch.

I think the excerpt misses the song "Sharing the night together",  another hit.  Looks like the other co-lead singer, LoCorriere sings it.

Sorry...

I'd probably pick that one as a favorite but, "Cover of the Rolling Stone"  is one of those songs that has been played on the radio, millions of times.
