Also, today marked the birthday of Gracie Fields, looks like she was British and even recorded before World War II.

Given one of those DBE awards, Dame? of the British Empire? I know that doesn't sound right but her website calls her Dame Gracie Fields:

http://graciefields.org/wordpress/

Some people say that life is a game, well if this is so
I'd like to know the rules on which this game of life is based.
I know of no game more fitting than the age old game of cricket
It has honor, it has character and it's British.

Now God laid down the rules of life when he wrote those Ten Commandments
And to cricket those ten same rules shall apply.
Show compassion and self-righteousness and be honest above all
And come to God's call with bat and ball.

She was a frequent performer on old-time radio, including several appearances with Fred Allen. Quite a lady.

I heard Willie Nelson has cancelled a few shows due to breathing problems. The man is 84 years old.

https://consequenceofsound.net/2018/01/willie-nelson-cancels-upcoming-tour-dates-due-to-breathing-issues/

So wishing him a recovery, I think I've also seen his son has had some performances with Neil Young.

Peter Schilling recorded a sequel to David Bowie's "Space Oddity"

Major Tom

I see a song Phish performs, "David Bowie" .... and then, some sources seem to infer Edgar Winter wrote it but I have no idea. I will let this thread remain open for some time.

David Bowie passed away on January 10, I believe 2 years ago. A lot of news articles out there on him.

Addendum, wow is that Pat Benatar song above very good... really, that's probably my favorite by her, Shadows of the Night, now there's some '80s music for you, a lot of good songs.

Phish's "David Bowie" was written by their guitarist Trey Anastasio; they recorded it on their debut album, and numerous concert versions
exist. (Phish is rather famous for issuing passels of live albums, which makes sense considering their largely improvisational nature and
the point that, as often as not, they rarely play the same set list on successive nights unless they're doing a special performance such
as an album by artists they admire.)

@pookie18
I like both, too, but I like the remake better since it's such a great example of 1960s urban soul. The best part: the Dells' lineup was
unchanged between the original recording and the big hit remake.

Did you know: Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes got to become stars in the 1970s because of the Dells, sort of?

In 1972, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff had put together an album's worth of songs aimed specifically at the Dells, and more specifically
at their lead singer Marvin Junior. At about the same time, Harold Melvin discovered the drummer in his touring band had a voice
somewhat similar to Marvin Junior---a kid named Theodore Pendergrass. Gamble and Huff had just launched Philadelphia International
Records and landed a big distribution deal with CBS and were hoping to lure the Dells to the label, but Chess (the parent of the Dells'
label Cadet) wouldn't let them go. They caught onto the Blue Notes with Pendergrass moved out from the drum kit and into the lead
singing slot and gave them the songs they'd meant for Marvin Junior. Including . . .

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, "If You Don't Know Me By Now"
! No longer available

. . . and the Blue Notes became crossover soul stars, at least for a few years, until Melvin's penuriousness and refusal to top-bill
Pendergrass, the clear star of the group, caused Pendergrass to leave for the solo career that was a huge success until his tragic
accident. The Blue Notes never again were that successful.

Quote
In 1968, Elton John tried to commit suicide after relationship problems with a woman, Linda Woodrow. Bernie Taupin, the lyricist, and Baldry[11] found him and Baldry talked him out of marrying her, helping make Elton John comfortable with his sexuality. The song "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" from Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was about the experience.[12]
