Sam Phillips himself considered this man his greatest discovery, about whom he said his first reaction hearing him was, "This is it, this is where
the soul of man begins" . . . (he leased some sides to Chess before that label simply signed the man themselves . . .)

Howlin' Wolf, "Well That's Alright"

God, what it would be worth on film to see the fervour in that man's face when he sang. His eyes would light up, you'd see the veins come out on his neck and, buddy, there was nothing on his mind but that song. He sang with his damn soul.---Sam Phillips, on Howlin' Wolf.

I had a $4000 car and $3900 in my pocket. I'm the onliest one that ever left like a gentleman.---Howlin' Wolf, about his move from Memphis to Chicago in 1952, after Leonard Chess
bought his recording contract outright.

January 6th, 2018 Music Thread... TV themes topics

Does anyone remember the Rockford files tv theme? It's pretty good and I even joshingly emailed Michael Medved saying he should play it on his tv show...

Well, guess what? Some musicians seem to think it is good and there is a minor plethora of "Rockford Files" covers.

That band, are they called "They Might Be Giants"?, they have performed it. It's kind of like the Munsters' theme song, it has it's own popularity.

Sid Barret of Pink Floyd:

And last but not least, Malcolm Young of ACDC, I've heard one talk show that plays these songs as bumper music, this one in particular, I didn't know it was really pretty good.

This one seems to be fine. Nothing like a daily reminder in different ways that this would be an intolerable world
without music.

That is fine, I think if people don't participate, we end up missing a lot of music because simply, they aren't on the birthday lists.

Maybe we should stick a note up there saying not just "all music welcome" which it is, but this isn't just a birthday thread?

Moody Blues rocker Ray Thomas dies before Hall of Fame induction ceremony

Ray Thomas, a founding member of British rock group The Moody Blues, has died at 76, months before the band is due to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

His music label, Esoteric Recordings/Cherry Red Records, said Thomas died suddenly Thursday at his home in Surrey, south of London.

"We are deeply shocked by his passing and will miss his warmth, humor and kindness," the label said Sunday. "It was a privilege to have known and worked with him and our thoughts are with his family and his wife Lee at this sad time."

See more at above link.

He just had his birthday the other day, Dec. 29.

In High School, a lot of times, different people had their favorite bands, it kind of helped define their personality, one of my friends really liked the Moodies.

Among stars who passed away on this day in 1994, Pat Buttram, Mr. Haney,

Quote
Buttram was a staunch Republican who helped Ronald W. Reagan spice up his speeches with political quips.[1] In 1993, Buttram expressed surprise that with the inauguration of Bill Clinton and Al Gore as US President and Vice President, respectively, so many Hollywood actors were "taken with that whole country-boy image they tried to project."[1] According to his niece, Mary Buttram Young of Sheffield, Alabama, "Uncle Pat would always say, 'I'm from Alabama – I can see right through that'."[1]

Was married to this actress, Sheila Ryan: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheila_Ryan

Red Simpson of trucking music fame also passed away on this day in 2016.

It's "Big" Al Downing's birthday, no, not that Al Downing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Downing_(musician)
This Al, "Big Al Downing":

Al Downing played with Bobby Poe and the Poe Boys, they recorded on White Rock records in Dallas, so a mixed race group in the 1950s. Looks like the video says they are in the Kansas Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Big Al, like Wanda Jackson, appears to have been born in Oklahoma.
"Rock and Roll Boogie"
! No longer available

Solo with the Poe Kats.
"Down On The Farm"
! No longer available

Al was proficient on the piano, he plays it on the Queen of Rockabily's, Wanda Jackson's big hit, "Having a party", a time-honored classic to many, at least for Rockabilly.
! No longer available

So, there are a lot of birthdays today, that's one, some others...

Steven Harwell of Smash Mouth, this organ, though a different sound per distortion is very Doorsy to me.
"Walking On The Moon"
! No longer available

None other than Joan Baez, I may not always like her politics but she has a great voice and I think a new album coming out at sometime in the near future:
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" performed in Norway.
! No longer available

And maybe a bit hidden, tucked away here,  Jimmy Page's birthday as well:
"Rock and Roll"
! No longer available

Crystal Gayle, Loretta Lynn's sister and does one know, she has hair that goes (or went) all the way to the ground, well, maybe just past her hips in the video, her wikipedia bio indicates she was called something like Rapunzel.
"Don't it make my brown eyes blue"
! No longer available
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crystal_Gayle

Vic Mizzy, apparent soundtrack artist on the Addams Family and other shows and movies:
Theme from "The Love God?" movie.
! No longer available
I never saw this with Don Knotts, shades of Austin Powers from the looks of it, maybe it's not too good of a movie, I believe in looking at Vic Mizzy's works rather quickly, he also did the organ in "Ghost and Mr. Chicken".  On the topic of Don Knotts, Mr. Chicken and the Reluctant Astronaut rate as pretty good comedies to me, so where has this "Love God" been? Maybe it was for mature audiences? I'll look it up some time.

Dick Yount, Harpers Bizarre, the 2nd day in a row with this group I believe. Yesterday was a different member, not the same one.
"59th Bridge Street Song (Feelin' Groovy)"
! No longer available

And actually, more birthdays to come later, we will see.

Yes, NY Dolls again, with David Johannsen and others.
"Personality Crisis"
! No longer available

Including Buddy Scott, "Never be the same"
! No longer available

RIP, she is a pretty good singer per the song posted above.

Sometimes, I don't care how rock and roll sung in French sounds when it is a male singer but this above works well.
