285 million dollars is a lot of money to me, but not a whole lot to the gov't (we increase our debt by around that much every 2-3 hours). So I was curious just how much of a cut this was to our total contribution to the UN. Turns out it's more than I thought.
The regular budget (which doesn't include at least peacekeeping/raping and tribunals -- I couldn't find numbers for those) for the UN is $5.6 billion, of which about $1.2 billion comes from the US. So it's a pretty big (~25%) cut of our (surprisingly low, IMO) total contribution, and about a 6% cut of the total for the UN.
I don't know if the general budget includes things like, oh, rent of the building(s) and security, or if we just pick that up separately.
