Lake Lucerne in Switzerland, as seen from land.

Early on September 18, 1601, the town clerk of Lucerne in central Switzerland reported feeling a large earthquake.

Renward Cysat was staying in a nearby town at the time and, as he travelled back the next morning, saw material washed up along the edge of Lake Lucerne.

Some of it was up to two "halberds" (about four metres) above the water line.
