Words to live by.

I want to pass along some advice a grizzled old mechanic gave to me. Because he liked me he use to let me work on my cars his garage. Being on such friendly terms he put me about 200 feet away from him in a dimly lite, ventless area of his garage where I could tear things up on my own. This particular day I was all under the car fighting a Bell housing bolt that was frozen and inaccessible to a human with hands larger than a ten a old girl. Nothing was working. Swivel sockets. Swivel ratchets. Extensions. Nothing. Eventually after hearing all the cussing and swearing he sauntered over to see what all crying was all about. I was looking up at him from the floor thu the exhaust pipes and maze of various wires and tubes to the area near the radiator where he stood looking down at me. I said; "Hi". He grunted back at me. He was a great communicator. I calmly explained the situation. After what seemed like an hour he finally spoke in a non grunt., in real words. Now this was exactly 45 years ago. And I can still hear his voice and I remember it like it was yesterday. What he said was; "Boy. Don't force it. Use a bigger hammer". Then he turned and walked away. That piece of advice has helped me tremendously over the years and has made the mechanics I have taken my cars to correct damage I have done...very wealthy. One guy even named his boat after me. I thought that was nice of him since I darn near paid for it.

Anyone else have a story to help the young and dumb.

Gleaned from my father over the years (RIP):

Business Ethics (Old Skool):

A day's work for a days pay.
Pay forward when you can, and save for the rainy day (It will rain).
If they look out for you, you look out for them.
No more profit than you need, and leave some on the table for the next guy.
A good thing is well made, on time, at a fair price, and will last as long as possible.
Pay more attention to the warranty than to the new work.
Good intentions are cheaper than lawyers.
The best advertisement is "Word of Mouth".
Do what is right, not what is expedient.
Worry about the work, the money will come.

Just a few...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
The government is likely NOT here to help you.
Tell the truth, you don't have to work hard to remember what you said.
K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid)
When someone says, "Okay, this is the truth"...it isn't.
There's three sides to every story. His side, her side, and the truth.
Don't be a sucker. If it sounds too good to be true, it is (too good to be true).
There ain't no free lunch.
Don't do anything you wouldn't want to admit to your momma.
Be polite, be courteous, but have a plan to take down anyone you meet.
Sit with your back to the wall, facing the exits.
You don't have to look for trouble. It'll find you all too soon.
Never create an enemy when you don't have to.
Treat everyone with dignity and respect until they demand otherwise.

How God must weep at humans' folly! Stand fast! God knows what he is doing!
Seventeen Techniques for Truth Suppression

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

C S Lewis
