My understanding was a mapmaker overstepped his authority in naming the Cape during all the sympathy after the assassination, and when somebody pointed it out, the name was quickly changed back.

Something similar happened in AZ.  The Governor (a Dem) was in a hurry to rename "Squaw Peak" (cultural insensitivity, ya know), and she ordered it to be renamed after a soldier killed in Iraq.  Turned out the soldier died when she took a wrong turn and drove a Humvee into the teeth of a bunch of enemies.  Her friend was captured by some very confused Iraqis, who didn't know what to do with her.

The law prohibits naming places after people until 5 years after they die to prevent this sort of fiasco.  Napolitano was a Dem so she just ignored the law.  I give you better than even odds the Florida mapmaker who renamed Cape Canaveral was a Dem too.

I hadn't heard one way or the other.  I did just look this up on Wiki, so you can take that for what it's worth...

Name changes

A post office in the area was built and listed in the U.S. Post Office application as "Artesia" and retained this name from 1893 to 1954.[24] It was "Port Canaveral" from 1954 to 1962, and lastly the City of Cape Canaveral from 1962 to 1963, when a larger post office was built.
Cape Kennedy

From 1963 to 1973, the area had a different name when President Lyndon Johnson by executive order renamed the area "Cape Kennedy" after President John F. Kennedy, who had set the goal of landing on the moon. After Kennedy's assassination in November 1963, his widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, suggested to President Johnson that renaming the Cape Canaveral facility would be an appropriate memorial. Johnson recommended the renaming of the entire cape, announced in a televised address six days after the assassination, on Thanksgiving evening.[25][26][27][28] Accordingly, Cape Canaveral was officially renamed Cape Kennedy.[23][29] Kennedy's last visit to the space facility was on November 16, six days before his death;[30][31] [32] the final Mercury mission had concluded six months earlier.

Although the name change was approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names of the Department of the Interior in December 1963,[33] it was not popular in Florida from the outset,[29][34][35] especially in the bordering city of Cape Canaveral. In 1973, the Florida Legislature passed a law in May restoring the former 400-year-old name,[36][37] and the Board went along. The name restoration to Cape Canaveral became official on October 9, 1973.[38] Senator Ted Kennedy had stated in 1970 that it was a matter to be decided by the citizens of Florida.[35] The Kennedy family issued a letter stating they "understood the decision," and NASA's Kennedy Space Center retains the "Kennedy" name.[23]

The Gemini,[39] Apollo,[40] and first Skylab missions were all launched from "Cape Kennedy."[41] The first manned launch under the restored name of "Cape Canaveral" was the final Skylab mission, on November 16, 1973

Sometimes us old Florida crackers call it Cape Kennedy, it used to be called that in the 60's I think, and then was changed back to Cape Canaveral.
It was Cape Canaveral, then Kennedy, then Canaveral again.

Not to get back on topic or anything  :tongue2:

but the governor of Fla has declared all Fla counties in a state of emergency.  Looks like this thing will hit one part of Fla or another - or most of the state....

So it seems.  Every model assumes a sharp north turn North of Cuba.  It seems prudent to get the supplies prepositioned and start evacuations where  needed.  If they're wrong about the turn, the other Gulf states will have a couple of days to prepare.

She made a funny comment to me, when they were looking at houses, they found a street named after Anthony Nelson and one after Jeannie! I had to laugh over that, but wondered why they didn't name them after Larry Hagman and Barbara Eden instead.

The weird thing is, my godson found those old tv shows and he loves them!

I'm really worried for them. I know a few snow birds with property in Florida

Man this turned into a beast of a storm.  Looks like models show it going through around Cuba and then turning north into Florida, possibly up the middle of the state.

I guess if it's a Force 5 it can go pretty much wherever it wants.

The NHC is pretty good on track for up to about 3 days. So I expect Irma to be in the cone Friday AM, after that who knows. Three days ago they (NHC) had it going to NC and up the Atlantic east coast now its going to into the Golf of Mexico and up Floridas' west coast.   That is quite a change in the forecast. But models are better with strong storms then they are with weaker systems. So maybe that turn really will happen.

I just hope Irma stays far away from SE Texas.

Allen came into South Texas when I was living in Corpus Christi and holds the record of wind speeds at 190 mph and at the time the lowest barometric pressures ever recorded in the GOM other than the famous 1935 Labor Day hurricane.

My wife was 8 1/2 months pregnant and I was really worried about having to deliver a baby due to the low pressure.  Coincidentally,  I am in a waiting room right now awaiting that same baby give birth to a new grand-daughter.
