With the League of United Latin American Citizens State Convention coming to Corpus Christi this June, it is appropriate to review South Texas’ role in the quest for civil rights for the Mexican American community.

Our city’s legacy in the civil rights movement reflects a deep commitment to equality for all and for the right of all to seek the American dream. We’ve been fighting for civil rights for a long time, but often the struggle of the Mexican American’s quest for civil rights is left out of the history pages.

After the Alamo, Mexican Americans became second-class citizens in their own land.

Tejanos, American citizens, were treated like animals, shot and dragged by Texas Rangers. Brutal lynchings, theft of property and outright discrimination was rampant. Trailblazing Hispanics fought for their civil rights and without this, Texas and our nation would not have prospered. Here are some heroes everyone should know.
