Some energy drinks contain high levels of caffeine. It is not known which brand of energy drink Davis Cripe consumed.

A healthy teenager in the US state of South Carolina died from drinking several highly-caffeinated drinks too quickly, a coroner has ruled.

Davis Allen Cripe collapsed at a high school in April after drinking a McDonalds latte, a large Mountain Dew soft drink and an energy drink in just under two hours, Gary Watts said.

The 16-year-old died from a "caffeine-induced cardiac event causing a probable arrhythmia".

He had no pre-existing heart condition.

There have been other cases of people overdosing one energy drinks, but they were mixing very highly caffeinated drinks with lots of alcohol. This is absolutely not recommended behavior.

Hmph, strange. I knew a guy who measured how much coffee he drank by the pot. They have been drinking loads of caffeine in the Navy for years. How come this is only coming out now in 2017?

Your body adapts to caffeine over time. A young body not adapted to it taking a large dose is a bad move.

He must have had a high sensitivity to the stuff.  Even in my 20s I could consume more than that without ill effect.

As someone alluded too, this particular individual may have been susceptible to too much caffeine.  I've had enough caffeine where I might get twitches before.

One can say alcohol affects people in different ways, perhaps that is the same for a lot of these substances.

Energy drinks have guarana and a few other substances in them. This individual may have taken a lot more caffeine than the article mentions.

In college We drank Jolt Cola for the caffeine

Anyone remember Jolt Cola? 

Now. I can't drink any caffeine my body won't tolerate it.

Depends on if he was already dehydrated; that alone can put an extra load on the heart. Most folks who drink a lot of coffee have been doing it for a while and the body gets used to it.

I remember Jolt.

Have a good friend who consumes tons of caffeine.  She's 70 years old.  Always black coffee, caffeinated sodas or some kind of energy drink.  Then she complains she can't sleep at night and her heart beats fast.  No wonder.  I once suggested she have a glass of good old water.  You would have thought I had suggested she drink poison. 

Since the cardiac arrest, I've given up caffeine and alcohol.  Have to admit I feel a lot better without them.

When Jolt Cola came out, I spent all night programming and absent-mindedly drinking a 2-liter bottle.

I'd never had caffeine much prior to that.  And it hit me!  Heart felt weird, tremors, etc.

The only time I've ever gotten that was after eating a whole bag (I forget how big, but a couple of handfuls at least) of chocolate covered coffee beans. They were good though. That'd be my choice for staying awake; forget brewing it, just eat the beans.

I just calculated 2 liters of original Jolt at 805.8 mg of caffeine.  That's a bit more than 8 cups of coffee.

For a kid who hadn't had caffeine much, it was strong.


I love chocolate-covered coffee beans!

I make Folger's instant coffee sometimes, it is easy to make too much.  To me, it's a good coffee.  Convenience is the main consideration in choosing it.

Point of information - the total number of receptors for caffeine in the human body is only equivalent to about 1000 Mg in 24 hours. Anything over that amount will not be processed by the body or metabolized.

Also, the time of day is a factor in how caffeine can invoke heart attack - early morning ingesting (especially just after waking up) is problematic.
