Dalai Lama UCSD Controversy: Holy Leader Visit Sparks Chinese Students Matter Backlash In San Diego By Cristina Silva @cristymsilva On 02/21/17 AT 4:17 AMChinese students at the University of California, San Diego, are protesting an upcoming visit from the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader. The students called the university's decision to ask the Dalai Lama to serve as this year's commencement speaker culturally disrespectful and described the holy man as a separatist leader intent on dividing their home country, a view shared by China's Communist Party. The Chinese Students and Scholars Association at UCSD said it contacted the Chinese consulate in Los Angeles to initiate negotiations with “relevant departments” at the university. Students also protested the decision on Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #ChineseStudentsMatter.
