The Travis County sheriff’s new immigration policy goes into effect today. The policy limits what information local law enforcement share with the federal immigration agency, and it's already stirred up a lot of controversy.

This morning, Gov. Greg Abbott came through on a pledge to cancel $1.5 million in criminal justice grants from his office to Travis County over the policy.

So, what is this new policy from Sheriff Sally Hernandez, anyway?

She has directed deputies and staff of the Travis County Sheriff’s Department to not honor most warrantless requests from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to extend the detention of people booked into the local jail. If there’s no warrant, the sheriff’s policy agrees to detain only those charged with murder, aggravated sexual assault or human smuggling.

Within days of making her policy public, Hernandez became the target of condemnation from Abbott, who argued her policy is a threat to public safety.

I wonder how the good citizen-voters, of Travis County TX feel about such policing practices?

Do they agree with their sheriff, or not?

Recall her is possible?

Given the fact that Austin is the epicenter of all things Liberal in Texas...im guessing Austinites feel the sheriff hasn't gone far enough.

A bill, or bills, are being prepared right now to remove any elected law enforcement official who refuses to carry out the laws of Texas and/or federal law.  Gov Abbott wants it retroactive so he can remove her now.  Don't mess with Abbott, his wheelchair is one mean chair.

She campaigned for the office saying that she would make sure that Austin became a "sanctuary city", and won with 62% of the vote; her nearest competitor received 31%.  So yes, I think you can safely say that the majority of citizen-voters of Travis County agree with their new sheriff.
Let it burn.

Yeah, I just spoke to somebody who knows somebody else, and the comment was "Abbott is a d##k".  That person used to be ethical and a clear thinker.  Sort of rocked me back on my heels.  Abbott is who you blame?  Really?

I really like my Governor, I must admit, since Richardson, they've all been pretty good.

It's like Michigan.  Boards I've surfed, people swear Gov. Snyder personally strangled people in Flint, MI.  Do people think we elect Kings or something?

I know sometime it gets tough.

And it was actually Richards not Richardson.  She is now peacefully buried in the Texas State Cemetery in Austin

Kinda ironic if a PP devotee and the daughter lives, eh?

I do remember it.  And, if he were still alive, I'd bet he still remembers it.

I know Clayton.  That was one of his milder quotes.

You should have heard some of the not-so-mild ones at the dinner I went to with him.  In mixed company.

I met him and his wife once at a cattle auction.  He was well-mannered for the brief time I was there.

I certainly believe it @IsailedawayfromFR and though Ann was just as Brash, she could get away with it.

Yup. He was actually talking to his ranch hands down in Alpine and an AP reporter tagging along overhead him say it and reported it.

When it hit the papers we knew he was on his way back to Midland.

Claytie impressed me to no end back in 2003 right before I went back active duty...i was picking my wife up at the airport and he was on her flight from Houston..sat next to her actually...i hadn't seen him.in maybe 10 years and he called to me by name and asked how my dad was doing. Blew me away.

My wife asked me who he was and when I told her she was like "I'd have never guessed that he seemed like just a regular guy "

His summer ranch parties were legendary.

No Governor should have that power. Definitely not something that should be possible on a whim without some sort of process.
