Outrage Dilution-Scott Adams' Blog

Jan. 26th, 2017

I’m having a fun time watching President Trump flood the news cycle with so many stories and outrages that no one can keep up. Here’s how the math of persuasion works in this situation:

1 outrage out of 3 headlines in a week: Bad Persuasion

25 outrages out of 25 headlines in a week: Excellent Persuasion

At the moment there are so many outrages, executive orders, protests, and controversies that none of them can get enough oxygen in our brains. I can’t obsess about problem X because the rest of the alphabet is coming at me at the same time.

When you encounter a situation that is working great except for one identifiable problem, you can focus on the problem and try to fix it. But if you have a dozen complaints at the same time, none of them looks special. The whole situation just looks confusing, and you don’t know where to start. So you wait and see what happens. Humans need contrast in order to make solid decisions that turn into action. Trump removed all of your contrast by providing multiple outrages of similar energy.

You’re probably seeing the best persuasion you will ever see from a new president. Instead of dribbling out one headline at a time, so the vultures and critics can focus their fire, Trump has flooded the playing field. You don’t know where to aim your outrage. He’s creating so many opportunities for disagreement that it’s mentally exhausting. Literally. He’s wearing down the critics, replacing their specific complaints with entire encyclopedias of complaints. And when Trump has created a hundred reasons to complain, do you know what impression will be left with the public?

He sure got a lot done.

Even if you don’t like it.

In only a few days, Trump has made us question what-the-hell every other president was doing during their first weeks in office. Were they even trying?

For a fun party trick, ask your most liberal friends if they think the Federal government should have a say in whether a woman gets an abortion or not. When they say the Federal government should stay out of that decision, inform them that President Trump shares their opinion. He doesn’t want the Federal government to be in the business of making health care choices for women. He prefers leaving that decision to the woman, her doctor, and state laws.

Some answers to questions, like how does Trump manage to defeat the democrats, the media and some Republicans (Jeb Bush, Bill Kristol, Glenn Beck, etc.)

Answer: He is way ahead in terms of understanding media, management, etc.

NEW PARADIGM. Leading, not just going along to get along, like many Republicans.

Scott Adams never makes any sense.

He could explain it to YOU with cartoon characters, if that would help.

What Adams (and actually Trump) both realize is that verbal attacks on you do not actually affect your ability to wield power.  They only create the perception that you've actually been weakened.  Normally, a White House that was getting attacked for all the stupid stuff Trump says would be focusing its energy on damage control.  But Trump doesn't care about damage control, so he keeps just forging ahead with what he was going to do anyway.

To put it differently, it talks Trump perhaps one minute to send out one of his tweets that sends the Democrats and media into a frenzy for a day or two.  Trump then spends every other minute doing all the stuff that matters.

It's completely bizarre, and I hate a lot of the stupid stuff he says/tweets.  But the truth is that it doesn't seem to matter, and Adams has sort of illustrated why.  It's outrage overload, and they don't know what to do because Trump isn't responding by acting cowed.

Trump is brilliant here. As soon as he make another Executive Order, Tweets about the Mexican President, reinstates the Keystone pipeline or a dozen other daily Trumptastic events; the enemedia goes ape bleepy.

But even as they sputter and spew over any single issue - Trump has outpaced them with 5 or 6 new decisions, Tweets, comments and what have you.

These poor snowflakes are clutching at their pearls in total bewilderment. They hardly know what to be outraged at next!

God Bless Trump. He's got these media whores trying to figure out their (Obama) from a hole in the ground.

One hour interview of Trump with Hannity tonight 7 PM EST Fox News.

He is like a Gattling Gun, blasting away almost continuously.

He out worked his opponents, and he is out working his detractors, too.

It might not occur to you, but the area surrounding DC is mostly inhabited by government workers. Democrats. Liberals.

So Obama can easily fill places where his constituency lives.

Not so easy for a Republican, let alone a Republican that means business like CUTTING GOVERNMENT.

To fill the area with Republicans requires travel from greater distances, on a scheduled work day.

Dare I say it?  Winning!

I am enjoying the ever-lovin' whatever out of this!  The Liberal tears are just a delicious side dish.
As much as I'm enjoying the left get a nice unexpected comeuppance, the heavy-handed approach he's taking still makes me nervous. There are so many people that are gunning for him that he could very well take action so extreme that it's going to have troubling collateral damage.

Take, for example, the brouhaha going on in the science departments. Trump does not have a scientific background and, let's face it, doesn't have the expertise to deconstruct scientific arguments. He's a salesman, and bad word of mouth is the worst thing a salesman can experience. So he tries to clamp down on the social media in a way that reeks of censorship. They rebel, he cracks down again. Why is this dangerous? Because our science departments aren't typical government/political agencies. They have a higher standard of adherence to the truth than most any other agency. If Trump begins treating it like just another pawn in a game of manipulation it will undermine a lot of things upon which our country depends.

So does that mean you "believe" in the climate "science" of manmade global warming?

Like Obama did with NASA?

I don't give two flips about the global warming "scientists."  Shut it down.

There's a difference between shutting it down... and keeping them going, but with political operatives determining scientific fact.

The first is fine and good; the other smacks of Lysenko.

Oh...25 outrages a week is excellent.  Silly me...I though it was embarrassing.
