I agree with all those who are saying that Trump just read words written by someone else. We all know he doesn't believe any of those things. Trump is not the kind of guy who would read the speech ahead of time and make sure that it represents him and his positions. He is not that arrogant. His ego is not that big.

Trump just reads whatever someone puts in front of him like a robot. Trump is the kind of guy who would use a teleprompter to speak to a class of children in third grade. That has a problem with Trump's campaign all along. People have been telling him that he has to get off his teleprompter addiction. But he won't listen. Trump is the kind of guy who simply goes along, and who always does what he is told.

In fact, I think using speechwriters should be illegal for all politicians. The next time I see any politician using a teleprompter, or reading a speech, which is rare anyway, I am immediately going to dismiss everything they say as being written by someone else. No politician should be allowed to read a speech written by a speechwriter. That is so disingenuous.

Fire every speechwriter in Washington D.C.! That will screw Trump over big time.

I'm not a Trump supporter; but I'm a little confused by your comments.  For a very long time Trump was criticized for not using a teleprompter and speaking freely which got him into trouble; now your saying him using a teleprompter is not a good thing.

Secondly, the notion that Trump listens to others is where I strongly disagree.  Trump is a narcissistic demagogue.  Trump listens to Trump and Trump does what he feels is going to benefit Trump first and foremost.

Presidents and presidential candidates have had speech writers for decades. IMHO, I think this was one of his best speeches; it may have been written for him, but he read it through and he prepared for that speech for awhile; otherwise there wouldn't have cancelled a couple of rallies, announced there was going to be a speech on immigration and he wouldn't have made a focus of going to Mexico.  This was a calculated move.

Was last night's speech enough for me to vote for him?  No.  I don't trust him.  #NeverTrump

Know whats so sad?

The guy reads words someone else wrote and all these people start thinking "Hey, he's got it right!"

Remind you of another guy's effect on the gullible masses about the past 8 years running?

Its called politics.

So you don't believe then what Trump said.  How then can you believe anything he says; especially when he continues to flip flip?

Come on....

Referring to criminal illegals here, he also said that "In the 1st hour of my Administration....they're GONE!"

So according to you, that's a lie too!?

You think he'll gain ground?  This is the end of his outreach to Hispanics. He will lose support in the Hispanic community.

Also, the majority of the country favors a path to legalization and citizenship for those already here.  Even a majority of Republicans do.  In recent polls.

http://www.pollingreport.com/immigration.htm

So, Trump is solidifying his base and the ardent anti-immigrants, but this will do nothing for him with the rest of the country.

Yes I do think he will gain ground.

He did not close the door on a path to legalization. He said that discussion would have to wait until all the other aspects of immigration reform and border control were put in place and were effective. I realize a lot of Trump's base didn't hear this part, but amnesty will be part of the deal done the road. I doubt Trump will lose much support among Hispanic Americans. I'm sure there's a fair number who don't like being automatically lumped in with illegals. Also, Black Americans may not come out and vote for Trump but he might increase the percentage that don't vote. All in all the speech is a net plus for Trump.

One trend I do see on TBR is a group of nevertrumpers will not under any circumstances acknowledge Trump's success's. I much rather try to look objectively at each issue. My lack of support for Trump is locked in at this point, for a lot of reasons, but I can see how this speech will work to his benefit.

This seems to be a blind spot Trump supporters can't see. The total lack of character Trump displayed in the primaries not only against Sen Cruz, but other candidates as well, dismisses him from ever getting a vote from a lot of conservatives. It's not a question of "hurt feelings". Trump lacks the character to be POTUS.

I'm surprised at you DC throwing accusations at me. I don't have hate for Trump.  As you may recall, I was a Trump supporter in the beginning and certainly I am not letting pride stand in the way of my judgement. This country is in dire need of a true leader, but I also am being realistic and seeing the flip-flops that Trump has continually laid out along the election trail.  I have also stated that I think Trump's speech last night was a good speech.  I'm just not buying into his 'hype' again and I am thinking about my children and grandchildren, that is why I could never vote for Trump.  I see him as a gestapo-type leader and he scares the living heck out of me!

I hope he is 'superman' and I am wrong in my evaluation of him. It certainly would make life a lot simpler.

This is insightful writing. I will get blow-back for writing this, no matter how much I try to qualify it, but SOME, certainly NOT ALL, of the #NeverTrump crowd are active Hillary supporters for various reasons.

There are paid Hillary people who pose as NeverTrump.
There are some NeverTrump people who want to 'punish' the Trump supporters.
There are some NeverTrump people who want Hillary to win to prove they were right when they kept saying Trump is unelectable.

There are more reasons than just these, but yes, there are so called Republicans who want Hillary to be elected for whatever personal reasons they may have. As such, they are fundamentally incapable of acknowledging anything good about Trump at all, under any circumstance.

It is no secret that the Hillary campaign is involving itself in the NeverTrump movement as much as they possibly can. Trump could jump in a river and save a drowning baby and the first thing many NeverTrumpers would say is, 'So what? He only did it for pubicity!' There is no getting through to this kind of person.

Why do Trump supporters use the exact same rhetoric and tactics and accusations (always involving "hate" or variations of insults involving the concept of being "butthurt") that the rabid left always uses ...against people that don't like or trust Trump?

How about the reason that Trump is just a trojan horse liberal whose positions probably will finally lie in the same vicinity of Clinton?  Why pin a failed liberal Trump presidency on the GOP?

I understand that point of view. I really do. I get it. But...then what?

Trump may be as Liberal as Hillary, but we know beyond certainty that Hillary is as Liberal as Hillary.

What is the answer? And 'folding all the cards' and walking away is not an option. There is too much riding on it.

The question is simple. Are you going to draw, or fold?

You're going to love the first part of my answer....

I flip-flip on whether to vote for Trump about as often as he does in policies.
(Told ya you'd like that).
I can't speak for all of the #NeverTrump crowd, but I can tell you that I have been staunchly #NeverHillary (or Bill) since they first came on the national scene in 1992.
How Bill made through the primaries still surprises me, as much baggage as he carried, yet he did.

At the end of the day I will either vote for Trump, or only down ballot.

This speech, should he stay on this message until November, makes it more likely that I will vote for Trump to stop Clinton (after voting in two failed attempts to stop her husband), rather than pass.

But it isn't the Trump supporters that are stopping me, or making me hesitate, although they sometimes haven't made it any easier.
Not a case of sour grapes.
It is Trump himself, for the reason listed in my first sentence.
It's no more complicated than that.
Which Trump do we get? 1990's, 2012's, yesterdays, last week's?
I'd like a solid month of steadiness, at least.
Heck, I'd probably settle for a solid two weeks at this point.

I'm still waiting for 72 hours.

We didn't have to wait:

Dang, .....just dang!

Quote from Trump today:

"Oh, there's softening. Look, we do it in a very humane way, and we're going to see with the people that are in the country.

Obviously, I want to get the drug dealers out, we've got a lot of people in this country that you can't have, and those people we'll get out. And then we're going to make a decision at a later date once everything is stabilized.

I think you're going to see there's really quite a bit of softening."

Just what is he saying?
