The U.S. Navy is taking steps to put armed sailors at recruiting centers in the wake of the July 16 attack in Chattanooga, a Navy spokesman confirmed Friday.
"The arming of personnel at these facilities provides both a deterrent value and a defensive capability against potential attacks," Capt. Ray Benedict wrote in a Navy statement.
A year ago, a 24-year-old gunman pulled up to a recruiting center on Lee Highway and opened fire from a convertible. One Marine recruiter was wounded, but no one was killed.
