A top U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement official admitted before the Senate Immigration Subcommittee on Thursday the Obama administration's reforms to deportation policies have caused the decrease in removals of people in the U.S. illegally.
In the hearing, Chairman Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., questioned officials about the reason for declining deportation figures and increasing criminal alien release numbers.
Sessions purported that immigration officers receive calls from police officers in non-sanctuary cities asking for agents to take an arrested illegal alien into federal custody, but the agents do not respond because the criminal alien offenders don't meet removal guidelines, which were modified in President Obama's November 2014 executive actions on immigration.
"That is true," testifying witness Thomas Homan, executive associate director of enforcement and removal operations within ICE, told the subcommittee.
