Donald Trump unveils list of his top picks for Supreme Court
AP, By JILL COLVIN and MARK SHERMAN | May. 18, 2016 3:07 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for president, released Wednesday a list of 11 potential Supreme Court justices he plans to vet to fill the seat of late Justice Antonin Scalia if he's elected to the White House.

The list of conservative federal and state judges includes Steven Colloton of Iowa, Allison Eid of Colorado and Raymond Gruender of Missouri.

Also on the list are: Thomas Hardiman of Pennsylvania, Raymond Kethledge of Michigan, Joan Larsen of Michigan, Thomas Lee of Utah, William Pryor of Alabama, David Stras of Minnesota, Diane Sykes of Wisconsin and Don Willett of Texas. Trump had previously named Pryor and Sykes as examples of kind of justices he would choose.

The news comes as Trump is working to bring together a fractured Republican Party and earn the trust of still-skeptical establishment Republicans who question his electability in the general election, as well as conservatives in his party still wary of his commitment to their cause.

In a statement, Trump said the list "is representative of the kind of constitutional principles I value" and said that, as president, he would use it "as a guide to nominate our next United States Supreme Court Justices."

His campaign stressed the list was compiled "first and foremost, based on constitutional principles, with input from highly respected conservatives and Republican Party leadership."

Larsen, who serves on the Michigan Supreme Court and is a former law clerk to Scalia, delivered one of the tributes to the late justice at his memorial service in March. She served in the Justice Department office that produced the legal justifications for the enhanced interrogation techniques, including waterboarding, that critics have called torture.

Willett, a justice on the Texas Supreme Court, is perhaps best known for his heavy use of social media. His Twitter handle, @justicewillett, has more than 35,000 followers.

Pryor was initially given a recess appointment to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals by President George W. Bush. Senate Democrats had tried to block Pryor's appointments over his strong criticism of the Roe v. Wade decision that established a woman's right to an abortion.

Apart from Sykes, who is 58, the others all are younger than 55 and David Stras is just 41. The eight men and three women on the list are all white.

Trump's list is also notable for the names that don't appear. It omits two of the biggest stars in the conservative legal world, Judge Brett Kavanaugh of the federal appeals court in Washington, and former Bush administration Solicitor General Paul Clement.

Trump first said in March that he planned to release the list of five to 10 judges in an effort to ease concerns about his conservative credentials, which had come under attack in the heated Republican primary.

"I am going to give a list of either five or 10 judges that I will pick, 100 percent pick, that I will put in for nomination. Because some of the people that are against me say: 'We don't know if he's going to pick the right judge. Supposing he picks a liberal judge or supposing he picks a pro-choice judge,'" Trump said at an event in Palm Beach, Florida.

He said then the list would include judges "that everybody respects, likes and totally admires" — "great conservative judges, great intellects, the people that you want."

The vow marked a rare moment of acknowledgment by Trump that he could be doing more to appease those in his party opposed his candidacy.

Trump had said he would like to appoint judges in the mold of deeply conservative as Scalia, who died in February.

In the statement, he described Scalia as "a remarkable person and a brilliant Supreme Court Justice."

"His career was defined by his reverence for the Constitution and his legacy of protecting Americans' most cherished freedoms," he added. "He was a justice who did not believe in legislating from the bench and he is a person whom I held in the highest regard and will always greatly respect his intelligence and conviction to uphold the Constitution of our country."

Impressive list.

And an impressive candidate--Mr. Trump did exactly what he promised he would do--he's told us his list of nominees to the Supreme Court.

Well done, sir!   :patriot:

:pondering: hmm ok. Not bad, but time will tell.  He did say it was only a sample list.

It is a good list, if elected, I hope he follows through with someone on it.

Stras and Sykes are satisfactory prospects.   They're the only "candidates" I really know.

Stras was named to MN Supreme Court by GOP Governor Pawlenty and has done a creditable job and Ms. Sykes (former wife of #NeverTrumper Charlie Sykes) was nominated by Bush 43 and opposed by 27 of the most liberal Dem Senators in her Senate confirmation vote.

This is a hopeful development.

I'm just curious who on his campaign was responsible for coming up with this list. I don't suspect Trump is the kind of guy who puts a lot of research into judicial affairs.

I'm sure he has top notch advisers helping him.  I don't expect Trump to know everything, but I do expect him to know who to ask for advice.

Trump makes his own decisions, but he is smart enough to also listen to what his advisors have to say as part of the process.    I think Trump's going to make a most excellent President!

I detect a subtle but noticeable "change in attitude" from a few former anti-Trumpers in the forum.

After all, he's "not a conservative", right?

Yet if this list pans out, and a couple of good picks from it get to the Court, what difference will that make?

Granted, it's only a proposal at this time, but there might be some good choices here (will have to wait for further vetting).

Wife says she heard on Fox News that Sen. Jeff Sessions had major input into the list. I don't know how accurate that is.

I don't think it matters anyway. It might be a good list, but I expect that if Mr. Trump wins election, he would go to whoever the Senate majority leader happens to be and ask, "Who can I get approved?" and then go with whichever limp-wristed moderate or outright liberal the Senate leadership thinks is best.

Everyone of them is most certainly without a doubt better than anyone that vile witch Hillary would consider, but can he be trusted to actually follow through?  Probably not, but what other option does one have at this point other than take the chance and hope for the best.  I'll never forgive the 35-40% of GOP primary voters who forced this vile jerk on the rest of us though.

I have to admit that I am slightly impressed with the published list of who it is said, are his picks for SCOTUS.

I do remain skeptical that this is just a bone being thrown out there to win Conservatives over to vote for him in the General and I have a very real fear once the media hype passes and if Trump assumes the office - he will discard these picks as *suggestions* in the future, and 'make deals' with the Socialists in both parties to do another Roberts based on whomever the oligarchy tells him they want and whom they'll refuse to approve.

That said - Trump has a long, long, long way to go to belay the major, major concerns we have of his candidacy for the Top Spot.   This is the first positive, amongst a tonnage of negatives, and it does not take much of a negative to completely erase memory of a positive.

Then there are the rabid Trump Believers, who actually have done more to shove me into a #neverTrump camp than their candidate has on his own.

All of that will continue to be weighed in terms of making determinations.

We also don't know if Trump will go to the mat for any of these *suggestions*once the Marxist Left goes all Bjork on their arses.

Obama's Spokesimbecile today already declared the list to be 'unacceptable' and said none of the 11 *suggestions* are "consensus" candidates.

Will Trump renegotiate to get a 'deal' with such enemies of the Constitution, or will he fight like a banshee for these picks?

We don't know.  We know what he did as a citizen in regards to the Kelo decision, and if that ruling existed at the time he tried to run a woman out of her home for a casino, he would have been able to run roughshod over someone's private property rights.

Trump vows to undermine the 1st amendment but hey, he released a list of 'suggestions' for the supreme court!

America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. I'll need to see something concrete before my attitude changes.

Promises aren't worth the time required to make them, especially from Trump. He'll need to prove it.

That's going to depend on who controls the Senate.

That's why I said "limp-wristed moderate" (Republican control) and "outright liberal" (Democrat control).

There is no Republican control period.  Mcconnell take marching orders from Obama and Chuck Schumer.
