If it was a practical joke, why didn't he just come out and say it?  Instead he denies it was him, even saying it doesn't even sound like him. His lie and his refusal to discuss it further seems to be an admission of guilt. Kind of like forgetting to erase your internet history, before your wife sits down at the computer.
