Trump's potato gaffe

By DAVID FREDDOSO (@FREDDOSO) • 3/8/16 10:40 AM

Yesterday, a friend brought to my attention that Donald Trump, who never visited Idaho during this campaign, had tweeted this out in a last-ditch bid to snag another state.

Thank you Idaho! I love your potatoes- nobody grows them better. As President, I will protect your market. pic.twitter.com/kqx8un1jnw— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 7, 2016

This tweet makes me believe he's never visited Idaho in his life, and might not even be able to find it on a map. To be more precise, it illustrates once again how much Trump is willing to say without knowing even slightly what he's talking about.

Idaho potato farmers, like most other American farmers, benefit from free trade, and the freer the better. I'm not saying that because I believe in free trade — I'm saying it because farmers are usually its direct beneficiaries, the same way a group of steelworkers in a particular town might be the direct beneficiaries of a punitive tariff. When protectionists talk about sinister interests that support free trade, they're talking about people like the farmers Trump was trying to suck up to in his tweet.

The single trade policy that would benefit Idaho's potato farmers the most would be completely free trade with Mexico. Here's what the National Potato Council has to say on the matter:

"High tariffs, restrictive tariff-rate quotas, trade-distorting foreign subsidies, and scientifically unjustified phytosanitary restrictions can impede access for U.S. potato exports in some markets. Fair access to foreign markets and non-restrictive tariff levels are essential to the continued growth and prosperity of the potato industry."

The U.S. exports about 18 percent of its potato crop, and in Idaho that figure is probably even higher. Potato growers are not worried about competition from "cheap foreign potatoes." They do not want their market to be "protected" — what they want is for Congress to approve the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement, so that they can sell more potatoes into Malaysia, Mexico, South Korea and other foreign countries.

No one expects Trump to be an expert on potatoes, but everyone should expect and demand that presidential candidates at least study issues on which they're going to make policy proclamations. On this and other issues, Trump knows nothing and feels very comfortable showing it at all times.

As a side note here, your average Idahoan does not farm potatoes, and finds the whole potato thing to be eyeroll-worthy. Comedian Dave Barry, who vacations in Idaho, jokes that "Famous Potatoes" was put on the state's license plates in order to discourage obnoxious East Coast people from visiting the Gem State.

If Trump had known anything about Idaho, he probably would have said something about fly fishing instead. If he'd known anything about Idaho potatoes, he probably would have confined himself to saying how delicious they are.

A GOP candidate has about as much chance of losing Idaho as you do of voting for Trump.
Trump has created a cult and looks more and more like Hitler every day.

Idaho farmers support the TPP and oppose Trump's tariffs.

I wonder what Idaho farmers feel about potentially losing their farmland to eminent domain because some government bureaucrat turd is playing footsie with a developer who convinces him the land would generate more tax revenue than a subdivision or a golf course.

When my ship was temporarily assigned to Philadelphia I found most Northeasterners I talked to horribly  ignorant about the Northwest. I swear many thought we were all lumberjacks, wore fur mukluks, and the highlight of our year was the annual Indian potlatch.

It really makes one wonder about some posters. I wonder how many candidates are aware of the asparagus fields in Minnesota and the cranberry bogs of Wisconsin and why they would.

Well, they had to have somewhere to go after bankrupting California  with socialism and pricing it out of even their budgets.

They were really flooding into Denver and Colorado Springs when i was living there in the 70's. Colorado is actually a pretty conservative state, but you would never know it because most of the people that live there live in Denver and Colorado Springs areas, and the Dim left flat OWNS that territory.

When I was a wee lad in CA, the state of Idaho used to run an ad on TV asking viewers how to spell "potato". Then the answer would flash on the screen as "I-D-A-H-O".

Soon even wee-er lads and lassies were saying they knew how to spell "potato": "I-D-A-H-O". After an uproar from parents and educators, the ads were pulled.

Get a clue, AbaraXas. You have far more to fear from the BLM, Fish & Wildlife, and the EPA when it comes to expropriation of private land.

Which - given Trump's views on taking private property - leads to the natural question:  just how bad will BLM, Fish & Wildlife, and the EPA become when Trump is in charge?

You mean of the last few hours?

Because the Nazi pledge salute criticism today was really weak, as was the lie of Trump "threatening" the hucksters suing him with the far-left New York AG railroading the case.  I imagine that poster curled up in the fetal position tonight in a ball of angry tears.

Based on what evidence?  I have evidence:  Trump has expressed complete support for the use of eminent domain to take property from one private owner and give it to another private owner.  What evidence do you have?

This issue is nonsense but to set the record straight "Since 2005, the U.S. potato industry has enjoyed a trade surplus in potatoes and potato products. Net export value (U.S. exports minus imports) of potatoes and potato products in 2009 totaled $180 million."  from the USDA.

I agree with you.

On the second issue of voting for Trump:

OMG!  I cant vote for Trump now, since he doesn't know potatoes.
I will add that to the list

The more serious list for me of why not to vote for Trump would include his attitudes towards women that encompass his entire life in the public eye from the 1990's to this election year (I am sure it is not needed putting up the myriad of quotes available on this issue), his public announcement that President Bush purposely lied about WMD in Iraq, his public announcements on the military following his orders no matter if they were legal or not, his encouragement  his published views in his book of using lies to convince people (move dirt around a building site to make it look that construction was going on when in reality there was nothing to get investors to invest), his refusal to release the audio of his off the record meeting with the New York Times to gauge how truthful he is being with his supporters, his vulgarity when discussing women, his comparison of his sex life to his own private Vietnam and his lack of remorse for affairs with married women, bringing up the size of his ***** in a national debate, and this does not even touch on a host of other issues including his flip-flops, refusal to release tax returns, his narcissism, and on and on. We do not demand purity in our candidates, but this is beyond the pale.
Cuky
I totally understand your thinking.
But just so you know, I was making a joke with all the dumb threads coming out lately.

I heard Trump preferred Pepsi over Coke.  I think I will start a new. Thread about it.
