Iran, Russia urge ceasefire in Syria

Ranking diplomats from Iran and Russia talked by phone on Monday about the latest developments in Syria, with both reiterating a call for political resolution of a five-year crisis that has gripped the Arab country.

In the telephone conversation, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian and his Russian counterpart, Mikhail Bogdanov, voiced support for the efforts aimed at establishing ceasefire in all regions of war-torn Syria, except those controlled by terrorist groups.

The two diplomats also stressed the need for delivery of humanitarian aid to the Syrian people and resumption of peace negotiations with the participation of the opposition that agrees on a political solution to the conflicts.

Bogdanov is going to pay a visit to Tehran at the invitation of Amir Abdollahian.

Iran and Russia, known as the main allies of Syria, have redoubled efforts in recent months to find a solution to the crisis that has plagued the Arab country for five years.

Syria has been gripped by civil war since March 2011 with Takfiri terrorists, including the Daesh (ISIL) terrorist group, currently controlling parts of it, mostly in the east.

The Syrian conflict has killed at least 260,000 people, according to the UN, and more than half of Syria’s pre-war population of 22.4 million has been internally displaced or fled abroad.
