Eric Garner Choked, and Now Berned

Eric Garner Choked, and Now Berned

Victor J Massad (exclusive to The Briefing Room)

On July 17, 2014 a 44 year old black man by the name of Eric Garner was choked to death by police officers who were enforcing the cigarette tax for their socialist mayor.  A year and a half later, Garner’s daughter Erica is using her father’s death to promote the political campaign of a socialist running for president.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Syln8IkOIqc&feature=youtu.be

I’d like to say that Bernie Sanders’ new ad featuring Erica Garner in her “I Can’t Breath” hoodie is the most duplicitous thing I have seen in politics this year, but in a year in which the candidates seem to have abandoned even the façade of ethics in their pursuit of the presidency, it is not.  Nonetheless, it begs the question: who will collect Bernie Sanders’ taxes, and what will Sanders’ enforcers do when honest taxpayers defy him by exercising their right to keep what they earn?

Eric Garner was murdered by big government because he dared engage in free market capitalism.  He simply wanted to improve his standing against a system that was keeping him down.  The system keeping Garner in poverty needed big revenue to enforce its mandates, and so it taxed cigarettes at an exorbitant rate (a tax, by the way, that falls disproportionally on the poor).  Predictably, this created a black market for cigarettes.  Garner attempted to exploit the opportunity by selling “Loosies” outside a convenience store.  Is there a better example of the irrepressible nature free market capitalism?  Of course, free market capitalists are untenable to the socialist bosses, and so they sent out their enforcers to stop him.  That is why Eric Garner died.

I am sure Sanders’ supporters think they are turning the tables on big business and the increasing wealth disparity in the USA.  They are hoping to use their collective voices to force the billionaires to wear “I Can’t Breath” hoodies.  Well, good luck with that.  African Americans might better ask themselves what is the common thread running through Detroit, Ferguson, Chicago, Baltimore and the other places where blacks are kept passive by strong arm tactics?  They are all cities governed by de facto socialists.  Maybe it is time African Americans questioned their assumptions.

The only difference between the cops who choked Garner to death and thuggish goons who work for loan sharks is that the cops had the legitimacy of law.  Bernie Sanders represents an ideology which will give the enforcers more authority, not less.  And yet, it seems the lessons of history have been lost on the delusional progressives.

The opposite of freedom is socialism.

I love this!  I wish I could get my niece, who is enamored with socialism, to read it. She probably wouldn't understand it though.  She just doesn't "get" capitalism, her indoctrination is complete.

Great piece....
I would offer some addition thoughts...

Eric Garner was resisting arrest and had heart disease so although a very tragic end, it was an accident and I have a problem with the whole murder thing.

Well, he was being arrested for engaging in capitalism by exploiting a market the city created.  Take away the cigarette tax and there would be no crime.  That makes him a victim of socialism in my book.

Interesting and thought provoking piece, Victor.  It is a root cause analysis which gets to the bottom of the "why-did-the-crane-topple" question.

Indeed.  The crane is a metaphor for the entire country.

Interesting take.  All black marketing is capitalism, as there's a reason for the market.  It may be high taxes, restrictive laws or even market created barriers.  But when laws are being violated, I rarely consider the criminal as the victim.  In the case of Garner, he knew he was violating the laws and then compounded it by resisting arrest.  The fact that this particular black market exists because of the high taxes should give New Yorkers some pause, but as outrageous as $4+ a pack tax is, it is the law.  I don't believe Garner's death was about either race or economics.

So was the law that caused Boston colonists to throw tea in the harbor.

I find the whole "I Can't Breathe" meme over a guy who was selling cigarettes mildly amusing...    :pondering:

Without considering the possibilities of another American revolution this time related to a tax on cigarettes in one state, are you suggesting that all black marketing should be legalized, or that laws such as giving preference to certain tea importers should excuse violent acts?  BTW, your piece was nicely written.

Take away the cigarette tax and there would be no crime.

So lets just do away with all laws and we can eliminate crime.
Or else lets just let the police legislate what they want to enforce.

Indeed that's where the logic of this premise points.  We shouldn't have taxes on things, and if we do, we shouldn't enforce them.

Why do you think legislatures keep passing more and more laws?

It is estimated that most people commit 3 felonies per day

Just to be clear, Massad did a good job on the piece and I am grateful that he posted it.
