Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

To cut to the chase here, the teen's own football team "dogpiled" on him in enthusiasm; this wasn't from anger from the rival school.  Odd case, I guess it belongs in "ridiculous news".  I guess someone has to be sued.

Teen in chicken suit mobbed at pep rally gets $10.5M from California school district

A California school district agreed Wednesday to pay $10.5 million to a former student who suffered brain damage when he was mobbed while wearing a chicken costume at a pep rally.

Kern County High School agreed to settle a negligence lawsuit brought by Mitch Carter. Jurors on Monday held the school district entirely liable for his injuries. The phase of trial where jurors consider what damages to award was underway when the settlement was announced, said Ralph Wegis, an attorney for Carter.

Folks might have vaguely heard about this story, now the details roll in of the gent who was riding a horse in NYC.

ABC News Coverage:

Quote
Police: Cowboy Who Rode Across Bridge Abused His 2 Horses

An 80-year-old man who has been riding around the country on horseback, saying he was trying to call attention to starving children, was arrested Thursday on animal cruelty charges after investigators concluded his horses were malnourished.

In his white hat, Tod "Doc" Mishler had gained national fame galloping into communities, a God-loving cowboy whose home was a horse.

He was arrested three days after riding over the Outerbridge Crossing linking the city's Staten Island borough with New Jersey. Veterinarians who examined his two horses said they suffered from malnourishment, dehydration and open sores.

On Monday, Mishler stalled bridge traffic as motorists stopped to stare. He was issued court summonses for blocking traffic and trespassing.

Thieves at large with 20,000 pounds of cheese in Wisconsin

OAK CREEK, Wis. — It's a caper of grand proportion in a state that loves its cheddar.

Police in southeastern Wisconsin say 20,000 pounds of cheese has vanished. The cheese, produced by U.S. Foods, was in a semitrailer parked at a business in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek when it went missing Thursday.

I heard about that theft; amazing.  How does one sell 20,000 pounds of cheese? Where does one put it?

Youths do some crazy things, I did. But nothing like this. I know it can get some cute remarks, "survival of the fittest" or whatever.

She was only going to start her freshmen year in high school; so really young. I remember one time seeing in the early morning rush hour, these young kids were getting in the way of traffic.

I don't think this story merits being posted as a real news story but it is curious all the same.

You get a few kids together and they might do something they'd never do alone.

Girl, 15, dies 'playing chicken' with an oncoming train in Arizona in front of her daredevil friends

Mariah Contreras, 15, who was about to be a freshman at Willcox High School, died after failing to get out of the way of a train in time after playing 'chicken' with a group of teens. Each child would take a turn attempting to get as close as possible to the train and then dash out of the way before it hit them, according to Rios. Contreras wasn't able to get out of the way and was struck by the outer part of the train, Tuscon Now reported. The other teens she was with were unharmed and are 'doing OK', according to Willcox Police Chief Jose Rios.

Anyone who has ever driven well-inebriated has done something risky.

I never drank anything beyond beer in college, then, afterwards and living alone, was the first time I drank hard liquor, and the first time I ever drove after hard liquor; I learned pretty quickly to only drink it at home or if I wasn't driving.

What a dreadful story!  This will hit the town pretty hard because Willcox is tiny and in the middle of nowhere.  It's between Tucson and the New Mexico border just off I-10, and the largest industry is a mega-truck stop.

Girl dies after elephant throws stone in Morocco zoo

A seven-year-old girl has died after being hit by a stone thrown by an elephant from its enclosure at Rabat Zoo in Morocco.

The stone got past the elephant's fence and a ditch separating the animal and visitors, the zoo said in a statement.

The girl was taken to hospital and died within a few hours, the zoo added.

The zoo statement said the enclosure met international standards and said "this kind of accident is rare, unpredictable and unusual".

Odd, that! And I'm sorry for the little girl.

Woman spotted chasing cat on Sam Houston Tollway

 Friday, August 26, 2016 07:58AM
HOUSTON (KTRK) --
A feline on the freeway caused quite a frenzy and tollroad officials say it's an example of what not to do if you see an animal in traffic.

The Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) released video of the cat chase from Tuesday as a safety warning. It shows an unidentified woman out of her car and trying to trap the animal on the Sam Houston Tollway at Westview, seemingly unaware of the danger around her.

By the look of her hand gesture, drivers weren't happy.

A HCTRA Incident Response team and a deputy constable responded. With their help, the woman was able to rescue the cat safely.
