It's demographics.
Reminds me of a Star Trek tv episode about "M4" (or was it "M5"?), a powerful robot that threatened to destroy the Enterprise from within. There's an exchange of dialogue between Dr. McCoy and Mr. Spock:
"It's a machine, Spock! You can't argue with a machine!"
And so it goes with demographics.
You can't argue with them.
They are what they are.
And therein lies "our future".
Oh, we could have "controlled the demographics" -- just as we once did, up until the end of the 1950's.
Doing THAT would have determined our future, too.
But ... we didn't.
We gave that up, and in doing so, gave up on our future.
