Mike Huckabee Fails - Now Supporting the Common Core!

Liberals knew that if they could capture the schools, they would have future generations of people agreeing with them on almost everything.

They sold parents on the premise that public education is “free.” In reality, it has been very costly, not only in monetary value but in ideological devaluation.

Mike Huckabee does not seem to understand this.

“[F]ormer Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee (R) called on conservatives to ‘stop the fight’ over the Common Core standards and, instead, consider the positive effects the nationalized standards might have on students in poor-performing schools.”

commoncore10thEvery school my wife and I have taught in, including public schools, homeschooling, private schools, which are the real public schools, church-related schools, for-profit schools, and classical schools) has had standards from pre-school to senior high. Every school has standards, even schools where kids graduate only being able to read at a 7th-grade level.

There didn’t seem to be a problem with learning when I was going to school. Each year there were courses that had to be taken and expectations that had to be met. It’s not rocket science.

The problem isn’t with the standards; it’s with the content of the curriculum that is about indoctrination rather than learning, liberalism, the goals of those in control of education, the competency of the teachers, unions, and the motivation of the students.

You can have the best set of standards the world has ever seen and yet there still will be unmotivated students and disinterested parents.

If it's just about standards, then all a school needs to do is spend time at some of the nation's best schools and follow their example.

Poor-performing schools aren’t the result of the curriculum. It’s more about expectations, motivation, the demand for excellence, and why an education is necessary.

The education establishment today is more concerned about pushing a certain leftist ideology. The goal is control.

The very first sentence is easily proven false:  all one needs is one counter-example to prove the falsity of a general blanket proposition and my daughter's school does just that.  They teach common core - because we're in NY and have no choice - and they also happen to do very patriotic things, like saying the pledge of allegiance each morning (which my public school in Fairfax, VA, never did back in the early 80s).  The claim that common core is, per se, some sort of liberal conspiracy, is itself a silly conspiracy, pimped out by a lot of people who ought to know better.

Common Core is just another means to spend federal money, on teachers, who belong to union s, and vote democrat.

And who could be against the children, against the teachers, against the schools.

Those cold-hearted racist Republicans, that is who.

With all due respect, no, it's not.  There has never been a dearth of excuses for teachers unions and their captive pet politicians to dump payola on the unions.  Common core is a set of standards - similar to, but not as rigorous as, those used in places like Singapore - and nothing more; that liberals are glomming onto the standards to use as an excuse to throw money at teachers unions has no real connection with the standards themselves, and is a bit like saying that an individual's propensity to go on a shooting spree depends on what brand of firearm he owns.  A psychotic shooter is going to kill with whatever firearm he happens to have at the time, or whatever firearm he has a personal predilection for; putting another brand in his hand isn't going to stop him from shooting to kill.

Respectfully,
If implemented the longer term result will be that the same old locations and groups are deficient, hence need federal money.

The money shouldn't need to take a round trip to DC, whereby it is diluted, and becomes conditional upon compliance.

Local control is best.

Local control is best.

The standards do not mandate federal involvement in the least.  The fact is the money was already there, and has been for years and years and years.  In fact, having a patchwork quilt of inconsistent local standards is an even better way to get more federal money into the system because you can play the better off the worse to generate more sympathy for "the kids" who can only be "helped" by throwing more federal money at the teachers' unions.

In point of fact, it was precisely local control over so-called "standards" that got federal money aflowin' to the states under No Child Left Behind because the money was handed out to school systems that were "successful" as a carrot to try and force them to improve, when all it did was cause them to continually dumb down the standards until they were low enough that enough kids could meet them, even if actually teaching remained the same or continued to deteriorate.

Local standards may have sufficed back in the 1800s, when most people were born, raised, and died in the same basic locality; they are anathema now.

Regardless of what you think of common core, I think Huckabee is showing his true colors here.  He is a stalking horse for Jeb Bush.
