The Wall Street Journal’s influential editorial board has its own take on a possible third presidential run by Mitt Romney: Not so fast.
“If Mitt Romney is the answer, what is the question?,” an editorial published Tuesday begins.
“The question the former Massachusetts Governor will have to answer is why he would be a better candidate than he was in 2012,” the editorial said.
The editorial dismissed comparisons to former President Ronald Reagan, who succeeded on his third bid for the White House.
“Romney is a man of admirable personal character, but his political profile is, well, protean,” the editorial continued, slamming the 2012 GOP nominee for “pandering to conservatives” and noting the same lines of attack that doomed him in the last election cycle might hurt him again in 2016.
The Journal’s skepticism comes days after Romney told supporters he is considering a 2016 run and amid growing signs that he is indeed serious.
“Republicans are likely to have a far better field in 2016, so voters won’t lack for plausible Presidents,” the editorial said. “It’s hard to see what advantages Mr. Romney brings that the many potential first-time candidates who have succeeded as governors do not.”
