Gun-Free Zone Sign Fails to Stop Shooter at Courthouse

Here’s another case where a gun-free zone sign failed to act to prevent a shooting.
It was at a county supervisors meeting at the courthouse in Maquoketa, Iowa where a man came to dispute his property taxes. He was actually a former Maquoketa city manager himself.
The courthouse had the usual gun-free zone sign posted at the entrance, which is supposed to deter those with ill intent from doing anything bad. They don’t usually work though.
This man was upset about his property taxes, and he said that he wanted to get to the bottom of the issue right then and there at that meeting. Right after the meeting had adjourned and had left the disgruntled man dissatisfied, he reached into his briefcase, pulled out a small handgun and shot at the county Assessor Deb Lane. He missed, and the county Supervisor tackled him to the floor before he could shoot anyone else. Anyone else besides himself, that is. In the proceeding brawl, the man ended up shooting himself in the head, probably unintentionally.

Francis “Gus” Glaser, 71, fired at a county employee during a county supervisors meeting before being taken down by Supervisor Larry “Buck” Koos, according to authorities. Glaser shot himself in the ensuing struggle, authorities said. Koos suffered an arm laceration that required stitches.
The elected official’s actions likely saved lives, according to Sheriff Russ Kettmann.
“If (Koos) wouldn’t have been there, more than one shot could have happened really, really easy,” he said. “If it wasn’t for him and another couple of guys that were sitting there, it could have been a lot worse than it was.”
Not only did Mr. Glaser not abide by the sign’s instructions, he apparently didn’t even have a concealed carry permit. I know that such things are infringements, but law-abiding citizens obtain permits if that’s what the law requires. This guy wasn’t a law-abiding citizen. I’m sure his grievances against the county or the city regarding his property taxes were legitimate, but trying to kill some local bureaucrat is not the way to deal with the problem.
