Jay Carney: ‘It’s Not Going To Be A Good Year For Democrats’
Posted By Al Weaver On 12:38 PM 09/14/2014

Former White House press secretary Jay Carney said Sunday that 2014 is “not going to be a good year for Democrats, by definition.”

The former White House spokesman appeared on CNN’s “State of the Union” panel to discuss about the 2014 midterms in one of his first appearances on the network since joining on as a contributor.

Carney, who was taken to the woodshed by Sen. John McCain Wednesday night in his first appearance, told CNN’s Candy Crowley that there is no outcome that looks good for Democrats in November.

“The sixth year is always particularly bad for a president’s party,” said Carney. ”You couple that with the fact so many seats are defended by Democrats in red states where Mitt Romney did very well against the president, double-digits in most cases, and there’s no outcome in November that anybody could say would be great for Democrats, except for barely holding onto the Senate.”

“The problem for Republicans, if they win, is Americans begin to think that ‘we hate Congress’ and it is now clear that one party is in control of Congress.”

Here is the history. If Obama's party loses 6+ seats in the Senate, it will be within the historical range.

In 1958, Eisenhower's 6th year, the GOP lost 13 Senate seats. In 1986, the GOP lost 8 Senate seats in Reagan's 6th year.

The party in the White House usually loses Congressional seats in the off years, although there have been recent exceptions (1998, 2002).
