On the one hand, California U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi claims that Democrats are not “fear-mongers;” on the other hand, she believes civilization is doomed if Republicans take control of the Senate from Democrats in November.

The former speaker of the House made those dramatic, incongruous statements on “Real Time with Bill Maher,” which aired live from Washington, D.C. Friday.

Maher asked Pelosi about recent polling which shows that the GOP is likely to take over the upper chamber and asked, given gridlock in Washingon, why it matters that Democrats keep control.

“It would be very important for the Democrats to retain control of the Senate,” Pelosi told Maher. “Civilization as we know it today would be in jeopardy if the Republicans win the Senate.”

Democrats currently hold 53 seats in the Senate. Republicans have 45. Two independents caucus with Democrats.

Maher asked about voter turnout for Democrats, which he asserted was too low to carry the party in the mid-term.

“Nobody comes about to vote to say ‘thank you,’” Maher said. “The people who get health care now — they’re the people least likely to vote. The people who come out to vote are the angry people.”

“That’s true,” said Pelosi. “Fear is a motivator, and we are not fear-mongers. The Democrats are messengers of hope, and that’s what we will continue to be.”

Nevertheless, Pelosi said she thinks election models are flawed.

“All of the prognostications are predicated on false, ancient, old, stale assumptions,” she claimed. “We’re in a whole new world of communications now.”

Pelosi pointed out that “prognosticators” initially predicted that former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor would win his GOP primary by 35 points. Instead, he lost by 10, she said.

“They were 45 points long, 90 miles off shore of Washington, D.C.,” Pelosi said of the pollsters.

“So how do they know what’s going on in the heartland of America?” the San Francisco liberal asked.

Their insanity is so obvious to US.  To the other half that actually vote for these nuts - I don't think it is as much of a matter that they CAN'T see it, but that they see it and they don't care - as long as it is good for them.

San FranNan is right. Historically speaking the GOP had a hand in building the behemoth that swallowed DC – Just take a look at the bureaucracy Nixon built, or GW for that matter. It was liberating once I accepted the truth. Of course, a Democrat is just a Republican on steroids, so to vote for one of those would be ludicrous.

Once you realize your party is on the wrong track though there's not much you can do in a two-party system. Still, party label means less to me the older I get. Of course, I must continue voting Republican. To do otherwise would disrespect the Constitution. Let's just say I'm keeping my powder dry.

My participation in political discussion forums has declined to nearly zero over the past few years.

My blogs are inactive and I've stopped posting everywhere except here. And the frequency of my posts will probably continue to wane as time passes.

Political debate, as I've always understood the term, meant just that... a debate where opposing ideas are batted about, with the ultimate goal being enlightenment of the people watching/reading/listening to the debaters and/or (at the very least) giving exposure to ideas so that the people at large could have a base to stand on as they formed their own opinions.

That is no longer the case in this country and the world.

Disagreement means that you are my enemy. Your ideas, if they don't gel with mine, can only destroy the world that I want to live in.

We label one another according to our differences, not our commonalities, our shared heritage, or even our humanity.

If you have what I can't get, you are my enemy. If you want to protect what is yours because you worked for it, you are an unsympathetic monster and should be brought to your knees.

Politics and religion have brought us to this point in the history of man, and what Pelosi doesn't understand is that civilization is already becoming unraveled.   

We are defined by the constantly redefined ebb of an unthinking entitled mob whose mentality is "I am owed".

It's a sad world that we are leaving our children.
