Watch Melissa Harris-Perry’s Insanely Over-The-Top Labor Day Story

When she isn’t apologizing for making fun of adopted babies or wearing tampons like they’re earrings, Melissa Harris-Perry is usually seeking new ways to produce the worst political commentary on TV.
However, this time, she’s outdone herself.
Harris-Perry’s Labor Day monologue Sunday was on minimum wage. She featured a story about Maria Fernandes, the New Jersey woman who worked four jobs and died in her car last week while napping between shifts. Fernandes consumed carbon monoxide and passed away in her sleep.
Huffington Post writer David Moye blamed Fernandes’ death on sexism and unfair wages. Harris-Perry completely abandoned sanity and took it 10,000 steps further.
“Maria Fernandes tried to take a nap between multiple jobs that she worked just to make end meet. She died in that car. In a parking lot. In Elizabeth, New Jersey. Just minutes from the Statue of Liberty. In 2014. In America.”
The implication here is that it’s un-American for Maria Fernandes, or anyone, to ever have to work four jobs and be paid so little.
Harris-Perry compounds the tragedy of Fernandes’ death, with the tragedy of Liberal illogic.
Maria Fernandes should be celebrated. She was clearly a hard worker. And there’s nothing more American than someone busting their butt to get ahead in this country. Her death was accidental, and it is hardly representative of the majority.
So instead of using this woman’s death to demagogue and bolster bad economic policy, mindless Melissa should celebrate her work ethic and champion fiscal remedies that will help create higher paying wages.
