Democrats have no hope of winning the Tennessee governor's race this year. And when you basically stop trying to field a candidate, you sometimes end up with a pretty wacky nominee.
Meet Charles V. "Charlie" Brown. As the Nashville Tennesseean notes, his campaign "
appears to consist of a Facebook page of him posing with three catfish." We would note that the Facebook page also
misspells Brown's first name as "Chrles." (Update: The catfish photo has since been removed; the misspelling remains.)
Despite this, he beat a local mayor who was actually running a campaign in Thursday's primary -- by double digits. It's nice to be listed first on the ballot.
But if Brown were just some random guy who paid the filing fee and happened to win, we wouldn't be writing this. No, rather it seems what little we know about Brown's platform includes his desire to electrocute the man he's facing off against in November.
Here's a screenshot of
what Brown apparently submitted to the Blount County Democratic Party in lieu of a candidate questionnaire. You'll notice toward the top, Brown says he would like to sit Gov. Bill Haslam (R) in an electric chair and give him "half the jolt."

the full "letter to the editor."Of course, this isn't the first bizarre major-party nominee for governor or Senate. As Southern Democrats have faded, they have managed to nominate folks like
Alvin Greene,
Mark Clayton and
Jim Rogers.
