It is a position that few politicians have experienced, but every last one of them wishes would happen to them. That position is the ability to say anything, make any observation, and have the media treat it as fact, or as wisdom from a higher power. In turn, the public believes it.

It was reported, and so it shall be, no amount of American firepower can hold Iraq together.

Excuse me, but the premise is nonsense.

The US took over Iraq in something like 39 days.  This, when the Iraqi military was coordinated.

Also, you need to remember that the people saying this are from the same cult as Harry Reid ("This war is lost!")....while in fact, the surge called upon by GWB was totally successful.

I doubt you're going to find many Americans who want to throw the lives of more of our soldiers and a trillion or two more of our treasure to defending people who won't even try to defend themselves.

There are truly "lost causes" in this world.
Iraq is one of them.
Afghanistan is another.

They can't be "won" (to our side) by conventional means -- which we've already tried.

This isn't to say they (and the other nations of islam) could not be conquered.
We don't have the will to do that, to do what it would take.
The West will never "conquer" or pacify the nations of dar al-islam without conquering islam itself.

Even when the time comes when we are faced with our own destruction -- as it may someday -- we may not be able to muster that will.

That was then, this is now.  Then you had a more or less unified country that had no serious organized armed fighting units other than the formal military, so when the military surrendered, the entire country perforce had to surrender.  That Iraq no longer exists.  In fact, as a practical matter Iraq no longer exists; the name now belongs to a rump state that will soon enough become a satellite to Iran.  Instead you have a number of independent military forces, each of which hates the others, and none of which is going to surrender just because one of the others gets beat by the Americans.

A dozen B-61 bombs would do wonders.  Won't happen of course.
