McChrystal Defends Bergdahl, Asks America to Wait For the Facts

Americans should not judge Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and his disappearance until they know all the facts, says retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who defends the dangerous and extensive search efforts for the soldier after he went missing.

"We're going to have to wait and talk to Sgt. Bergdahl now and get his side of the story," McChrystal said in an interview with Yahoo News on Wednesday. “One of the great things about America is we should not judge until we know the facts. And after we know the facts, then we should make a mature judgment on how we should handle it.”

McChrystal, a four-star general who led the Joint Special Operations Command in Iraq during the Persian Gulf Wars and was top Commander of American forces in Afghanistan, when Bergdahl went missing in June 2009, now chairs the Leadership Council of the Aspen Institute’s Franklin Project, which promotes national service among American youth.

“After Sgt. Bergdahl, then Pvt. Bergdahl went missing, we did a huge number of operations to try to stop the Taliban from being able to move him across the border into Pakistan,” the retired general said. "And we made a great effort and put a lot of people at risk in doing that, but that’s what you should do. That’s what soldiers do for each other.”

McChrystal also defended the controversial prisoner swap, in which five Taliban commanders were traded for Bergdahl's release, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism among Congress members on both sides of the aisle who are angry because lawmakers were not involved before President Barack Obama issued the order.

In addition, many in the military who were involved in the search for Bergdahl say he deserted his post, and that at least six soldiers died as a result.

"We don’t leave Americans behind. That’s unequivocal," McChrystal said of the exchange. "There will be a lot of discussion on whether the mechanism for getting Sgt. Bergdahl back was right — and I’ll leave it to people to argue that."

The entire issue, McChrystal said, brings up the issue of "responsibility and service," noting that Bergdahl had a responsibility to his fellow soldiers, but as a nation, the United States has a responsibility to the members of the military who serve.

McChrystal spoke to Yahoo from Gettysburg, Pa., where he headlined a summit for the Franklin Project on national service Wednesday.  Earlier this week, he advocated for all young people between the ages of 18-28 to perform a year of national service.

In a piece published by Politico, McChrystal wrote that a year of culturally expected, if not legally required, "challenging, meaningful" national service is "the big idea of our time" and would be mutually beneficial for both young people and the country.

Too bad McChrystal didn't extend his advice to the Administration, who is using Bowe al Ameriki as a political pawn.

Why do I have the sneaking suspicion that the administration is going to keep this kid under wraps until all of the facts are out, and then concoct some weird story that weaves all these "facts" together.  Then they'll lay the situation out for Bergdahl: stick with this story or be tried for treason.

If this kid is at all pliable, I'd look for him to be trotted out as a patriot who was secretly working for the intelligence services and faked his desertion in order to infiltrate the enemy; or something at least as implausible.

There is no telling what you might get when you have defense attorneys running the prosecution.

I agree.  There is no way that they are going to let this unravel, they will do whatever they have to in order to make a story congruent with their objectives.  We have seen that there is no LIE too big, nor any measure too LOW for this regime.  The only question that remains is how many are still gullible enough to believe them.

That's easy. At least 47%. When they are done with amnesty, it will be well over 50%.

There is no way the intel community will allow that lie to stand.  Obama backed the wrong guy, and the only way to make it go away is to ignore it.  The sliver of hope is that Obama is so arrogant, yet so stupid, that he may actually try to sell the "intel" lie, but it's so implausible that it won't stand up to scrutiny.

Maybe, but so much of what he says/does is implausible and yet it keeps getting bought time and time again.  Too many Americans are irretrievably stupid.

McChrystal is covering his own ass here.  He, ultimately, is responsible for the deployment of those six men who died searching for a deserter.

I don't believe ANY of these perfumed princes in the military hierarchy nor do I respect them.  They have traded their honor in service of a coward.

Except this time there are credible eyewitnesses--his unit.  And these soldiers are PO'd!! and they're talking, and not mincing words.

The zero administration did not see this coming.   :smokin:

Hence the effort to destroy their credibility as being 'psychopaths'.

On the one hand, we are asked to wait for the 'facts' on Bergdahl and on the other, we are being conditioned to think of his leaders as 'psychopaths'.

It should work though.  Too many people incapable of critical-thought...

Yes, 'psychopaths.'

Believe it or not, as I was flipping through channels sometime last evening, I actually heard a panel (it may have been CNN) on which one of the members suggested that Bergdahl may have been 'bullied' by his platoon mates.....
