Schiff: Benghazi committee 'waste of time'

The creation of a select committee to investigate the 2012 Benghazi attacks on a U.S diplomatic mission in Libya is a "colossal waste of time," Rep. Adam Schiff said on "Fox News Sunday."

The California Democrat sparred with host Chris Wallace over a recently released White House memo written by senior White House national security aide Ben Rhodes that discusses talking points about the root cause of the protests and the attack that killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens.

Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.) disagreed with Schiff on his assessment of House Speaker John Boehner's decision to convene a select committee. She also said there was political motivation behind the memo as the 2012 presidential election approached.

Schiff countered, saying "we tread down this path so many times." He suggested that Democrats in the House would not participate in the select committee.

"It's a tremendous red herring and a waste of tax payer resources," Shiff said.
