Funny money: Man tries to pay Applebee’s tab with $1 trillion bill

SUMTER, S.C. — Police were called to an Applebee’s restaurant in South Carolina after 53-year-old Michael Williams tried to pay for his lunch with a rather large bill last week. TV station WIS reports that Williams had first tried to pay with his debit card, which was declined, so he then tried to pay for the meal with a $1 trillion bill.

The bill was obviously a fake, but that’s not why police ended up escorting him to jail initially. Instead he was booked on an unrelated charge for contempt of court and ordered to pay $262 and received probation according to WIS.

But the station also reports that police continue to investigate the incident at Applebee’s and online court records show that Williams has been charged with larceny of a product $2,000 or less on Monday. He remains in the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center, no future court dates have been set. Details on whether his meal was paid for or if his server was tipped have not been reported.
