The Queen's addresses are about the closest. The opening address covers desired legislation in the next year. Her Christmas address covers what actually happened during the year to all of us, and her closing address sets the stage for next years plans.

Of the three, the Christmas one is most watched. Broadcast on BBC TV and Radio, bang on 15:00 Christmas Day.

The PM doesn't make a SOTU as such - but he has to stand in Parliament once a week and take questions. It's acceptable for him to say "I don't know" but he has to find out and provide the questioner with an answer within 48 hours, which must also be provided to Hansard (it's a massive compendium of every law, debate and answer since about 1800 and is public record).
The only other major national speech we have is the budget, where the Chancellor says what is going up (beer, booze and baccy ALWAYS go up) and spending targets for the year.

Like more than a few others on the forum, I'm so incredulous of WTF is going on around me, that I am purposely boycotting the speech.


They should be arresting him tonight and putting him on trial, not applauding him.

Under liberals in Australia they have raised the min wage to the US equivalent of $20 an hour.  As a result - Ford and other manufacturers are leaving Australia because they cannot afford to pay these low-level workers this high a wage.

WASHINGTON — The guests who will be joining Michelle Obama tonight to watch the president deliver his State of the Union address will include the first woman to lead a major automaker, an Illinois woman whose emergency unemployment benefits have run out, and an openly gay former NBA player.

It's become tradition for the first lady's guests to include those whose personal stories can help highlight a particular policy or issue.

Tonight, the first lady will be joined by Mary Barra, who became GM's CEO this month. The company benefited from a federal bailout of the auto industry. Another guest is Misty DeMars of Illinois. The White House says she lost her job because of budget cuts a week after buying a home with her husband in May of last year. She wrote to Obama after her emergency unemployment benefits expired.

Jason Collins last year became the first active male athlete on a major American sports team to come out as openly gay. He played for 12 years in the NBA. Obama has said his announcement marked progress for the gay community.

Also seated with the first lady will be two survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing. There will also be an Army Ranger who has met multiple times with the president. And the guests will include a man who was brought to the U.S. illegally as a child.

Also invited is the Atlanta woman who is credited with preventing a shooting at an elementary school by talking the gunman into surrendering.
