Advise For A Kindle
« on: December 19, 2013, 01:18:52 am »
I am thinking of buying a Kindle. I know nothing much about them besides they download books and you can read from it. What are the advantages and disadvantages? Can I read in sunlight with it? How long is the battery life? How much does it cost to download a book? Can you only down load books? Can you read without much light and not hurt your eyes? Are there other things out in the market besides Kindle that is better?

Do you just want this to just read books or to use on the internet like a tablet?

I read books on mine, browse TBR on it (but watch those auto-correcting words - a feature you can turn off)  - I even have Sirius/XM downloaded on it.. I have a friend with an IPad and she has the kindle Ap downloaded and I have the ap on my computer - but never use it since I have the real thing. Love being able to throw it into my purse when I have a doctor appt, can read in bed in low light, and yep, can read it outdoors. Love the ease of downloading a book in seconds.

I use kindles for books only. Easy to read in all light conditions, no eye strain like reading on a computer.

I have gone through a couple though - the screen can get messed up very easily (a heavy cat perching on one was enough to destroy the screen.)

Like them. Find them comfortable to use, especially if you grab a hard case for them (see above) that opens like a book so you are holding it naturally.

Kindle or Kindle Fire?

The former is just an ebook reader.  The latter is a tablet like a iPad or Samsung Galaxy.

Do you have WiFi connection?  Probably not since you are so rural - that will be a problem with any tablet.

iPad is Apple's tablet.  iPhone is Apple's cell phone.

Anyway, you're talking about a Kindle, which is just the eReader.

They have a amazingly long battery life compared to a Kindle Fire or other tablet and are usually easy to read in the sun.  Most if not all books do not expire after a certain amount of time although I've heard a few do.  You can also find a lot of classics for free because the copyright has long since expired.

There are other eReaders out there.  The main competitor is the Nook from Barnes & Noble.  It's about the same give or take.

Since you don't have the Wi Fi signal, you'll have to download books to your computer and use the link cable to put them on your kindle. Not a problem, you can do it while the kindle is charging.

When you purchase the book, do they tell you they expire?

Yep. There are USB chargers that just plug in to a socket.

I've never had a book I paid for expire, I guess if you download a free book it would have an expiration date.

I use my cellphone charger to charge my kindle. It plugs in the wall.
