by TONY LEE  12 Oct 2013

Conservative talk radio host Mark Levin blasted the Republican establishment at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. on Friday, calling the way the federal government is currently operating a "soft tyranny."

Levin accused them of spending more time attacking conservatives who are fighting a federal government rife with crony capitalism than in becoming more accountable to the American people.

Levin said there is a problem with the government when there are only a "handful of conservatives defending this nation against Obamacare" on the Senate floor. He said something is wrong with the Republicans when "[conservatives] are under brutal assault in their own party."

"When Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, Rand Paul are the exception, something is wrong in that party," Levin declared.

Saying he did not believe "Washington intends to reform itself," Levin said conservatives have to accept that the Republican Party today is not the Reagan Republican Party or the party of Barry Goldwater. Levin mentioned his support for Reagan in the monumental 1976 and 1980 Republican presidential primaries and his work in the Reagan administration's Justice Department.

He called the current Republican party the "status quo, neo-statist" party.

He again said that when "young men who won primaries against the establishment in Texas, Utah, and Kentucky" stand up against the leaders because the "old bulls" who have been around for decades "will not act on our behalf," all the "firepower" of the Republican establishment is directed at these young men. Levin blasted the Republican establishment for trashing conservatives like Cruz, Lee, and Paul in the New York Times and other mainstream outlets.

He called it "unacceptable" and said conservatives need to "make it clear to these politicians" in the Republican establishment that such actions will not be tolerated.

GOPe fears Ted Cruz and Rand Paul more than they fear OPapaDoc.  GOPe has more in common with OPapaDoc than it does with Ted Cruz and Rand Paul.  GOPe has no interest in killing OPapaCare because it represents another big government program that can be managed and used as a vehicle for collecting money from all the special interests that will be regulated by it.  That is the simple, unvarnished truth.

Advocates for killing Obamacare seem to forget that it can't be done from one-half of the Legislative Branch.  It was a fools errand to think Obama or the Democrats would defund their prime achievement.  Now, the spending caps from the sequester are in play, thus making this whole thing a net negative.

The Republicans allowed themselves to be driven by a couple of zealots who had no end game, much less a strategy to reach it.

This is the truth...it is a great way for the political class to access more payola from the private economy.  They never seem to think that if they keep taking more for themselves, they'll never reach the point where they'll kill their Golden Goose...all evidence of the last five years' moribund economy and growing under-class notwithstanding to them.  Of course, the Ancient Egyptian Pharaohs killed the workers that built their monuments...

Typical story: a relatively young, enthusiastic neophyte Republican (let's call her: Elly Kayotte) defeats her primary opponent by successfully running as a conservative-minded reformer who would "shake things up" in Washington. The money starts flowing in, as conservative activists start manning the phone banks and knocking on doors on her behalf. And she wins. Woo-hoo.

Once in office and comfortable ensconced in her new digs, the new junior Senator starts to develop... a strange new respect for the party's old-line, long-time leadership, especially after getting that committee assignment she's always dreamed of. Suddenly the fiery "reformer" takes to penning op-eds along with the senior senator from the other party about how she just wants to "work together" to "get things done".

Sound familiar? Eventually, every Republican who becomes intoxicated by power does the same damn thing. Every. Damn. Time.

Of course, she still pretends to support entitlement reform and deficit reduction, just like her new pals. But they'll never vote for either, when it actually counts. Why? Because there's no organized constituency for smaller government (other than the Tea Party, which is not a party but a movement).

But there are lots and lots of powerful little constituencies militating always for increased spending and more centralized power with which to dole out favors - to them.

And those that truly oppose such corruption and misuse of government power are not lauded so much as attacked for being "zealots" and "radicals". The system has to be changed from the inside, you see, and it must be done through negotiation and coalition-building.

How's that worked out for the GOP?

Oh, don't misunderstand: it's been great for the political class. They're having a party. Everybody's swinging. Dancin' to the music, on the stereo.

For the rest of us taxpaying suckers.... we're not dancin' to that tune. Not any more.

Yep.  They have racked up $17 trillion in debt, they print new money at the rate of $85 billion a month, and WE are the ones who are "zealots" and "radicals" for wanting to stop them.

No, politics is our time has become the art of convincing a hotel rape victim that they actually had a great time, and then sending them the bill for the room.

When you're getting screwed, the gentle arts of persuasion generally tend to fall somewhat short. Especially when the people you thought were your friends are helping to hold you down.

Yeah. Because Progressives aren't really trying to centralize government power, abrogate the Constitution, and destroy free enterprise.

You should send them some flowers and thank them for a great time.

If by "them" you mean Harry Reid, OPapaDoc and socialists in general, well, they ARE evil.  Aren't they?

Or do you think only Ted Cruz evil?  I can't remember the last time you spent any ink criticizing the left.  You seem to save all your vitriol for our side.

You have a very short memory.  I've been all over the disastrous roll-out of Obamacare, something which would be getting more negative press had the zealots not sucked all the air out of the room with this disastrous shutdown.

Maybe you're spending all your time prowling threads on the lookout for anyone who takes issue with Ted Cruz.

Since you have no defense of Ted Cruz, Victor, you attempt to make ME the issue.

Why did Ted Cruz shutdown all of his offices and refuses to take constituent calls?

Oh, and good to see that Ted Cruz came out of hiding to greet the veterans!!

Yes.  He quietly greeted a plane load of Texas Veterans yesterday morning when they arrived in Washington.

You make my point for me.

You don't unite behind a guy who's seeking an impossible goal, has no strategy to achieve it, and who characterizes anyone who opposes him as a Nazi enabler.

This is the same guy who has now shutdown his offices and sends all constituent calls to voicemail.

Cruz and Jordan could have had spending at current sequestration levels  on September 30.  Instead, Cruz insisted on defunding Obamacare, something he knew he couldn't do.

Now, the risk is that sequestration will be lost, the only thing the GOP has been able to manage in terms of reducing real spending in the last two years.

Ted Cruz has decided to close every one of his offices.

If you ever bothered to read anything you would have read they are furloughed thanks to the shutdown.

So how come so many of Cruz's staff is furloughed?  Cornyn's got the same constraints.

Your boy doesn't want to take phone calls.  Face it.
