While Republican lawmakers will bring Attorney General Eric Holder back to the Hill to explain testimony he gave on surveillance of reporters, they won’t be issuing him a subpoena. On Thursday, Republican leaders on the House Judiciary Committee sent a letter to Holder requesting his presence on June 18 or another date before the end of the month. They want him to testify as to what he meant when he told the lawmakers that he didn’t know anything about “potential prosecution” of the press, even though days later a story broke that Holder personally signed off on a warrant request for Fox News reporter James Rosen’s personal emails, arguing that Rosen was a possible “co-conspirator” in a national security leak situation.
Holder was supposed to respond to questions about that issue yesterday. He waited until after the Wednesday evening deadline to do so. He then pledged a review of his policies.
Testifying on Thursday before the Senate, Holder stated that his goal was to “identify and prosecute government officials who jeopardize national security by violating their oaths, not to target members of the press or discourage them from carrying out their vital work … I will not prosecute any reporter for doing his or her job.”
