Second jewel theft strikes Cannes film festival

A necklace reportedly worth 1.9m euros (£1.6m) has been stolen during the Cannes film festival, in the second such theft to hit this year's event.

The expensive piece by Swiss jeweller De Grisogono vanished after a celebrity party at a five-star hotel in the resort town of Cap d'Antibes.

The theft occurred despite "large security measures", including 80 security guards, the jeweller said.

Last week, thieves ripped a safe with jewels from the wall of a hotel room.

The latest robbery happened after a gala held at the exclusive Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc on Tuesday night.

The high-profile event celebrated De Grisogono's 20th anniversary, and was attended by international movie stars like Sharon Stone and Ornella Muti.

I keep trying to come up with a screenplay for it.

80 guards can be handled - people see only what they wish to see and what they expect to see.

Thefts are up BIG TIME here in our area - the bad guys are just taking over while law enforcement seems helpless to stop them.  I read the other day about a local guy awaiting sentencing for his 15th felony theft conviction - he got caught burglarizing 5 homes - WHILE WEARING A GPS ANKLE BRACELET FOR HOME CONFINEMENT. 

The judge was lecturing him, that he was CLOSE to going to prison for the rest of his life!!!  WTH does it take to lock these people away where they don't make the rest of us suffer?
